A bigger radius
is a different choice.

Read the geometry first. Then consider the cut, the edge and the stability of the setup.

Four corners, one size group

The sample CCGT 0602 sizes progress from 0.1 to 0.8 mm. The inscribed circle and thickness remain nominally the same.

80° cutting corners at the same enlargement. These are nominal radius diagrams, not product drawings.

Think in trade-offs

SMALLER RADIUS

Consider cutting forces

A smaller radius is one factor to consider when radial forces and vibration are concerns. Check the edge preparation and permitted cutting conditions too.

LARGER RADIUS

Consider strength and stability

A larger radius can strengthen the corner, but the force and stability trade-off matters. It is not an automatic route to a better finish.

Qualitative context: Sandvik Coromant insert-selection guide (opens in a new tab). These are selection factors, not cutting-parameter recommendations.

Work through these checks

  1. Drawing: what contour and corner does the part require?
  2. Product: what does the full grade, geometry and edge preparation specify?
  3. Cut: are feed and depth within that product’s stated application?
  4. Setup: how rigid are the workpiece, holder and overhang?
  5. Verification: confirm the required result on the actual process.

Apply that to 060202 vs 060204

You can conclude that the nominal radius doubles. You cannot conclude, from this change alone, that one product will produce a particular Ra, last longer or replace the other in a given holder.

Surface finish is not a dimension lookup

Feed, cutting-edge geometry, vibration, material and wear affect the actual surface. Check the drawing’s measurement requirements rather than equating radius with measured Ra.
