A complete dimensional and material verification of the first part produced.
FAI verifies that the manufacturing process produces parts that conform to the drawing before volume production begins. It is not a sample inspection — every dimension on the drawing is measured and recorded on the first part, including those a normal in-process check would skip.
It is required by AS9102 in aerospace and is good practice anywhere a part is safety-related or expensive to scrap.
Treating FAI as a formality once production is stable. It is specifically for the point before production, when the process is least proven.
